How coffee enema benefits the skin
BY OLIVIA ABELLA
Let’s talk about something interesting and a bit unconventional: coffee enemas. It’s a holistic treatment that involves infusing coffee into the rectum for detoxification purposes. While it may sound a little out there, many people believe in the potential benefits, including improved skin health.
Sometimes, you just have to try things for yourself to truly understand their impact. That’s exactly what I did eight years ago when I decided to incorporate coffee enemas into my routine. And let me tell you, I never looked back. Not only did it play a major role in healing my melasma, but I also experienced a range of other health benefits that I hadn’t expected. It was a transformative journey that opened my eyes to the power of holistic practices.
Why not approach it with an open mind and explore the potential benefits it can offer. Who knows, it might just be the game-changer you’ve been waiting for to achieve the skin of your dreams.
My introduction to enemas
I first got a taste of how powerful an enema could be in 2013 during my Ayurvedic studies in India. I was experiencing my 1st panchakarma, an Ayurvedic method of cleansing the body of accumulated toxins. They prepared about 1 liter of an herbal solution which I was supposed to hold for as long as possible. Being my 1st time I miserably failed the challenge and even though I only held it for a few minutes I still noticed benefits. From there on, I incorporated this practice in my wellness and skin health maintenance routine and to date I performed hundreds of enemas
I started doing coffee enemas religiously during my “Nutritional Balancing” program.
This therapy aims to heal your body at a deep level correcting any nutrient deficiency, removing heavy metals and balancing your body chemistry. Detoxification being a key component of this program, I had to do coffee enemas regularly for several months.
To be honest I’ve never been a fan of coffee (I had my 1st and last coffee when I was 13 years old!) so putting it in my rear seemed far fetched. I needed some solid evidence that it had the slightest benefit before even trying it out. That’s when I stumbled upon the Gerson Therapy on the internet. They’ve been using coffee enemas along with juicing to help people with degenerative disease.

The Origins of coffee enema
The mechanism of coffee enema
The active elements of the coffee enema are absorbed in the hemorrhoidal veins (about six inches inside the rectum) then go through a portal system which connect to the liver. This portal is called the hepatic portal.
Through the portal vein, the therapeutic compounds in the coffee enema, such as palmitic acid and caffeine go directly to your liver.
Once there, palmitic acid increases glutathione S-transferase, an enzyme critical in quenching free radicals. Gluthatione is also the master-antioxidant used by our liver to detoxify toxins, by up to 700%!
So, the glutathione captures the free radicals and toxins and safely escorts them to one of the pathways leading out of the body.
This enzyme also stimulates bile secretion which allow the removal of toxins.
WHAT ARE THE SKIN BENEFITS OF COFFEE ENEMAS?
Before my coffee enema days, I was struggling with lots of skin issues. Having fitzpatrick type IV skin and living in Miami is not ideal scenario. My skin was very prone to hyperpigmentation from acne scarring, sun damage and also struggling with melasma. However, the more I did coffee enemas, the better my skin looked. My skin was clearer with less breakouts but the enema was 80% better.

If you have hormonal acne
The link between your liver and hormonal system cannot be denied as the liver oversees several endocrine functions keeping them in balance. One of the major culprit in todays’ world is the presence of oestrogen everywhere: from plastic , our drinking water, to contraception and animal products. The liver plays a major role in filtering estrogen. A coffee enema will help the liver stay healthy to keep doing its job and releasing the excess estrogen through bile.
If you have melasma
As mentioned above, coffee enema played a big role in getting rid of most of my melasma. I believe for different reasons: Melasma is a complex skin condition very often triggered by the sun but the root cause is found deeper in the body: from hormonal imbalance , excess copper in the body but also candida/fungus. In my case, I was dealing with excess candida which the coffee enema helped flush out.
Of course, just doing coffee enemas won’t be enough to address this complex condition so I recommend following a specific diet and taking supplements alongside the enemas for best success.
If you have acne
Those skin conditions are related to inflammation in the body which is triggered when our cells encounter inflammogens or toxins. Those toxins can be in the form of heavy metals, bad bacteria, yeast, synthetic hormones and even parasites.
A coffee enema helps by removing those toxins by 1/ improving the elimination channels (especially when a person’s digestion/gut is struggling) 2/ providing relief for our liver to work its best and 3/ stimulating glutathione production in the liver by up to 600-700%, which is known as the body’s master antioxidant and critical for detoxification.
If you’re over 30 years old
As we age, our cells accumulate free radical over time and damage the skin when trying to grab an extra electron from other molecules in the body. When these molecules are stolen, it causes direct damage to our skin’s DNA which results in accelerated skin aging. The damage eventually appears on the skin in the form of wrinkles, sagging, dryness, dullness and unwanted pigmentation, like age spots and broken blood vessels.
Guess what is efficient in scavenging a wide variety of free radicals? You bet! Glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant !
I’ve already mentioned above that coffee enemas also have antioxidant effects as they increase glutathione production in the body significantly!
